I drove on autopilot, not even having the presence of mind to get on the highway, but instead took familiar streets as I headed back north toward home. Because for the first time in a while, I was completely at a loss. It was one of those moments where you felt your whole world imploding around you and hadn’t a clue as to how to stop it.

Exactly how I recalled feeling four years ago.

Although so much had changed since then, and as dysfunctional as my life had become, I’d already accepted it as my new normal and had grown accustomed to it. I learned to cope as well as I knew how. But, I was now faced with an altogether tricky dilemma. My mother had Wes steal the diamonds. Wes was killed over said diamonds. So, why wouldn’t Kiril kill my mother as well? If he ever found out, I knew there would be catastrophic repercussions.

Instead of driving straight to my mothers as my anger and worry screamed for me to do, I forced myself to drive straight to Amanda’s instead. Teddy was my number one responsibility so my mother could wait, my unintended detour with tailing her had already made me nearly two hours late in picking him up. Plus, I knew Kiril must have been aware by now that I’d broken out of my gilded cage.

As if in response to my last thought, as soon as I pulled into the parking lot of Amanda’s apartment complex, I spotted the large, black SUV and my mood plummeted even further. The Bulgarian Devil had sent Stoyan to do his bidding; it was a resounding reprimand as well a dickish move he knew I’d resent.

After lucking-up on a spot close to the building, I settled the Toyota into it, then sat for several aggravated seconds cursing Kiril’s existence. Before killing the engine and climbing out of the car.

As I marched determinedly past his SUV on my way to Amanda’s unit, Stoyan might have been invisible for all the attention I spared him. As a rule, I never spoke to him unless strictly necessary, which was hardly ever.

Stoyan had come here from Bulgaria with Kiril and was his right-hand-man, his jack-of-all-trades boogyman. But to me, he was simply a cold-blooded killer. The man who’d pulled the trigger and murdered my son’s father and would have murdered me as well.

The irony of it all was not lost on me either. I was well aware that he’d acted on orders from the boss, and therefore Kiril was just as responsible. Yet, I still couldn’t see past it—it might’ve been a mental thing but that image would be forever indelibly etched on my brain.

Amanda bombarded me with questions as soon as I walked through the door, confirming Stoyan had already come knocking. I paused briefly to field a few of them, but gave evasive answers and promised to explain everything later before quickly hustling Teddy out the door.

Amanda was as loyal a friend as one could have; I knew she deserved answers as well as honesty, but the truth was too dangerous.
